There are so many things we do to prepare for our little one’s birth. We take classes, hire a doula, decorate the nursery, the list goes on. For some reason, packing the hospital bag seems to be one of the most stressful. I’ve come up with some helpful things to pack, but don’t worry if you leave the bag by the door, you’ll be just fine as well! Most of these items are just nice to have.
I’m splitting this up into two bags (and two posts) actually. The first bag is for labor/birth and the second is for after baby arrives. You may want to leave your second bag in the car and run out to grab it a few hours after baby arrives. Be sure to check with your birthing location to see if they have the bigger items such as Birth Balls and Peanut Balls.
For Labor:
Something comfy to labor in (can be pants, a nightgown, or hospital gown),
Snacks (think easy to eat/not too chewy),
Massager (back rubs are great, but can tire hands quickly),
Phone Charger (go ahead and buy two extras to pack, one less thing to think of),
A second something comfy to labor in (in case your water breaks and the first is a mess),
More Snacks (something high in sugar, to keep you and your partner going during a long labor, think candy),
Water Bottle with a Bendable Straw (hydration is key),
Pillows (I’ve yet to see a good hospital pillow),
Blankets (see above, same),
Swim Suit for Partner (for shower or labor tub),
Eye Mask (rest is hard to get, this can be REALLY helpful),
Lotion (unscented is usually best),
Toothbrush/Paste (for laboring and support person),
Gatorade or Powerade,
Chewing Gum (no one is immune to bad breath),
Essential Oils (Lavendar/Calm, Peppermint/Nausea, and Orange/Energy),
Camera (if you have one),
a change of clothes for mom and partner after baby arrives (Robe for Mom, Button Down for Partner will help with skin to skin, make sure these are photo worthy!)
