What is a birth doula?

A birth doula provides emotional, physical, and educational support during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.  Doulas DO NOT provide any clinical support.  Blake will provide support to families leading up to, during, and after their birth.  Blake has been working as a Richmond doula since 2018.  Through her years of experience she has built many relationships with hospitals, birth centers, OB/GYNs, midwives, and nurses. While Blake primarily practices in the Richmond, VA area, she has and is happy to assist families from Williamsburg to Fredericksburg and the Northern Neck to Amelia.

Blake has been providing education to expectant families within the Richmond area since 2010 and in 2018 added birth doula services to her offerings.  She is a Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator and a Fellow in the Academy of Childbirth Education. Additionally she is a registered yoga teacher and certified prenatal/postnatal yoga teacher.

Blake is a solo practice doula who works closely with other doulas in the community for emergency backup.  This means that the person you call to schedule a meeting with will be the same as the one attending your prenatal/postpartum visits and supporting your through your birth.  Having a backup system in place is crucial because illness and family emergencies can strike at any time.  Know that in the rare circumstances that backup doulas are used, Blake carefully selects someone is best suited to work with you and your familiy.

Did you know?

A lot of research has been done on birth doulas and continuous birth support during labor and we have found the following facts.

When a birth doula is part of your birth team, moms experience:

  • fewer cesareans,
  • shorter labors,
  • increased birth satisfaction, and
  • better outcomes for mom and baby.

Doulas are a great addition to any birth team, not just for those seeking low intervention births.  Blake’s knowledge and experience of positioning, pain relief options, and caring presence can help parents achieve greater birth satisfaction whether or not they choose to use pain medication or have a planned cesarean birth.
